THE INVISIBLE EMPLOYEES

WORKING CAREGIVERS

SIX STRATEGIES TO WEATHER THE CAREGIVER STORM IN THE WORKPLACE

Selma and Zack met at work in 1999. One day during a conversation, they discovered they had at least three things in common: 1) they both held leadership positions in the company, 2) they both served as long-distance caregivers to aging, disabled parents while working full-time and 3) they both struggled with trying to find the balance between their leadership roles at work and their caregiving responsibilities to their families. Their conversation motivated them to write a book targeted to employers to provide them with guidance in supporting other working caregivers faced with similar situations. In addition to writing their first book, Selma and Zack founded a consulting company specializing in helping employers put these concepts into practical use in the workplace.

HOW THIS BOOK CAME ABOUT

WHAT READERS ARE SAYING

"Most family caregivers are also working at a paid job, and too often not receiving needed support and understanding in their workplace. Zack and Selma's book clearly explains the advantages for employers who support and retain their caregiving employees and helps employers ask themselves the key questions about how caregiver-friendly their workplace really is."

- Amy Goyer, recurring guest on NBC's Today, nationally known caregiving expert, and author, Juggling Life, Work and Caregiving

“The most successful organizations don't just focus on individual caregiver's success. They lay out a road map to connect their caregivers in meaningful ways. Selma and Zack have done just that in this book."

- Christopher Schembra, Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author, USA Today's "Gratitude Guru"

"this book provides a clear-cut case why companies should provide the support and flexibility to employees facing similar challenges and why it will benefit the company and the affected employee."

- Lee Silverstein, Host of the WE Have Cancer Podcast

  • (***** STARS) A Refreshing, Non-BS Take on Caregiving and Work

Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2024

The authors did a terrific job of capturing the overwhelming depth of what it means to be a working caregiver, especially the mental toll it takes. Too often, talk about caregiving centers almost exclusively around the difficulties of time management for employees. That's important, of course, but what's great about this book is that it provides a hyper-accurate view of the emotional aspects of caregiving and how they impact work, and vice versa.

As a caregiver, I found the book extremely relatable. I saw myself in the many stories. Likewise, as someone who's spent my career in HR and talent, I also appreciated how the authors wove in stats and information about work and caregiving, as well as offered paths forward for organizations.

Mostly, I found it refreshing that the book did NOT focus on those stats and information. Rather, by emphasizing the human aspect of the problem, the authors did a great service toward (hopefully) improving the state of caregiving and work.

  • (***** Stars) A Must Read, Absolutely "Right On" the Money

This book checks all the boxes for me. As a former HR Leader, and a long-distance part-time caregiver to my parents was one reason I left corporate was to have the time and flexibility to travel to help care for them. This book enlightened me to everything I went through. It's like a beacon of hope and brings a needed awareness that could very well change in how companies set employee policies, determine benefits, cost of turnover & recruitment, etc. The book says it all.

I love how the book is "creatively" written by approaching this topic in a unique way. You experience two "fictional" story's that grab you, then you get supporting data and insights on the topic. Selma and Zack bring these two together very nicely to give us, the reader, a full picture of what is really going-on with so many employees & how its time to pay attention to the "working caregiver". A MUST Read!!!

  • (***** STARS) I’ve lived it and wish I had more support from work

I was a Director in my Fortune 1000 company while a working caregiver who was also raising middle school kids. I wanted and needed to work but considered quitting because I was drowning. My management team tried to support me with some flexibility but I needed more. An internal support team, access to education around my new care role, and additional benefits like the ones mentioned in this book would have fast tracked me to a happier and healthier route. I think leadership in any company would benefit from reading this book.

  • (***** STARS) The Caregiver Perspective Is So Important

This book is so important for employers to understand the caregiver perspective. As a cancer survivor myself, I am so grateful for caregivers and know that this role certainly impacts their lives very much. Congrats to you both on this incredible book. I highly recommend it!

  • (***** STARS) Great Read and Powerful Resource

Selma and Zack have written a great book. Working Caregivers is not just about the Caregiver, it is about all of us who are impacted by the challenges of aging parents, and the burdens that many carry quietly and alone. This book provides great and practical resources that could impact not only families, but organizations. I would highly recommend that all Chief Human Resource Officers, Chief Medical Officers, and Chief Executive Officers in the best places to work, read this book.

Working Caregivers is engaging, enlightening, and informative. I could feel the pain and frustration of Carrie and Mel as they navigated the lonely road of caring for parents, while trying to live their personal and professional lives. This is a great, well written book!! Buy it and read it, even if you don't have aging parents, especially if you are a leader in a business or corporation. One day you will also be a senior citizen, whether you want to or not.

  • (***** STARS) A must buy and read

Being a caregiver myself, this book really spoke to me. The challenges we have as caregivers are really portrayed in this book. Employers need to be more in tune with what struggles we have. As an employer myself, I am both personally and professionally motivated to help others like me through reading this book.
